1492 Christopher Columbus: “This is the most beautiful land human eyes have ever seen”.
1519 Foundation of Havana by Spanish Colonists.
1762 The British occupy Havana for eleven months.
1868 Beginning of the Independence wars.
1886 Abolition of Slavery.
1895 - 1898 Second war of Independence against Spain let by poet-philosopher Jose Marti.
1898 US enters into war against Spain and with its peace treaty, Spain transfers Cuba to US control.
1902 US retains the right to intervene in Cuba under the Platt Amendment.
1952 Batista seizes power in a coup.
1959 Fidel Castro and the 26th of July Movement overthrow with an ample majority the corrupt regimes. The Cuban Revolution triumphs. Agrarian Reform Act.
1961 Bay of pigs – US-supported invasion of Cuba by mercenaries. Cuba declared as Socialist State by Fidel Castro. Imposition of US Embargo against Cuba.
1962 “October Crisis”
1989 Collapse of Socialism in Europe, depriving Cuba of over 80% of its buying power.
1998 Visit of Pope John Paul II.
2002 Economic growth and increased co-operation with Venezuela and other latinamercian states.
